Your call?

I'm 3-1 in favor of declaring (I don't want a heart, spade, or club lead going through me). I'll bid 2NT.

If I had:

Axxx AK4 T6 Qxxx

Now I'm 3-1 in favor of being dummy, so I'd X. Same HCP, same shape, just where I want to play it.

I think this hand is good enough for 2NT.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Sure it is good enough for 2NT.
But since it's MP, the issue is which call leads to the best partscore. If we're strong enough for game, we'll probably get to the best game whether I double or bid 2NT. I think double is best. Then we'll play 2 when that's the best contract. Or 3, if partner is weak with 's. The only trouble is if partner bids 2NT leb and comes back with 3 over my 3 rebid. But even that might be best.
So I'll double.
Kind regards,
Harald

2NT --- one bid describes my shape and strength. We still have time to finds spades, and even if we have 4-4 spade fit, 3NT may play better.

:P 2. Most likely spot for a plus score. Also, I want a spade lead against 3. Pass is safe, but it feels like a loser.

2

2nd choice Dbl

3rd choice abstain

Not good enough for 2NT for me in addition to that you will have to explain why you had to overbid when you could Double.

I was under the impression that the balancing bid over a weak 2 would be 18-20, similar to the a balancing jump to 2NT over a 1 bid showing 18-20 points.

Your righty could be passing with 10 to 12 hcps and you can go for a Tel. Number if they Double you. It looks too risky to bid 2NT.

Is 12-16 in this position the Expert treatment over a weak 2?

My impression is the standard treatment is to require ~ 16-18 for a 2NT balance. I tend to approach the bid as a solid direct seat 1NT overcall. There are (obviously) some exceptions. As you can see, a number of very good players are suggesting a 2NT balance with this 14 count. I suspect that most of these players believe that this particular hand is stronger than its 14 HCPs suggests.

Personally, I think that systemically balancing on a 12 counts in auctions like this is suicidal. You might get away with it in a weak field or if the opponents don't understand that you're playing highly flawed methods. If your playing in any kind of decent field, folks are are gonna be trap passing left, right and center.

You are so weird! Explain to partner why you overbid? I suggest that if 2NT works out badly you say something like "sorry partner, 2NT seemed best".

When choosing between a slight overbid and a complete misdescription (2S, double) I would always choose for the overbid. I expect partner to do the same thing and to respond "no problem, 2NT seems right to me too".

nah, I would say 15-18 is standardish. Partner will be expected to raise with random 8s and pass most random 7s I think.

Obvious 2nt (15+18) call for me. This hand worths more than 14 hcp. It has 2 sources of tricks (+) with good intermediattes and a good holding.
