Double, responsive. Partner will often pass with a doubleton heart, which is fine. If partner bids 3S I shall bid 3NT, which implies great uncertainly about the final contract, and he can pass with something good in hearts. If he bids 4C I pass in pain. If he bids 4D I raise.

I think this is a tough call (and I wasn't commentating and don't know the hand).

I really can't face 3NT. I wouldn't really like it with Q10x and there's just too high a chance that i) they cash the first 6 hearts, ii) we don't have 9 tricks

Agree.
Kind regards,

I don't recall this hand, but I missed much of the first sessions each day, and pretty much all of the mother's day hands. But, I will disagree with the commentors a little. The hand is too good at imps to pass, and the hearts are not sound enough to bid 3NT. And no way will I bid past 3NT to bid that anemic diamond suit. so, it is responsive double for me. Hope I don't play in a 3-3 fit. Sad truth is, if I didn' it wouldn't be anywhere near the first time.

BTW, let us know what the "right bid" is... seems to be splitting between dbl and 3NT.

I hate 3NT with a passion. I would sooner raise clubs than do that. Sign me up for double.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Look, I don't hate 3N, it could work very well if both heart honors are on my left and RHO doesn't have a quick entry. But considering that we need to run 9 tricks on top of this seems like quite the parlay.

LHO did indeed have the AK of hearts. RHO had an entry in the spade Ace, but LHO led a small heart (the Ace or King might have been better).

Declarer took 6 clubs (they were solid), 1 heart, and two/three diamonds via the diamond finesse. It appeared at the time, he only took one diamond finesse (maybe he did), but 10 tricks were claimed. I think RHO pitched his 2nd heart removing his link to partners hand.

But 3N is a terrible call, imo.

3NT was terrible but the player in question did in fact bid it?
Who was it? And what would have happened after a dbl?

I don't remember who made the 3NT call, it made (declarer decided not to risk the overtricks). Partner had 6 solid clubs and the diamond finesse was on.

I think that 3H is down 1.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

This was the full hand

Ok, so it would not have helped to begin with a high heart. I couldn't remember if East held AK10xxx or not.

I suspect that South expected more than just AKQJxx for the 3C bid. However, this is the set of results on the Board:

RESULTS OF BOARD 24
SCORES....FREQUENCY

These are the N/S scores

+430.....6
+400.....6
+100.....3
+50.......2
-50........4
-100......2
-110......2
-140......1
-300......1
-500......1

So evidently, lots of people bid 3N.

I doubt the auction was the same at all tables. Both 2H and 3H are questionable bids.

Especially 3.

I can see: (2) - 3 - (pass) - 3 - (p) - 3- (p) - 3N
