if u dont play negfree bids 3♦ is sign off, because u didnt bid them in 1st round.
for the same reason i dont like the x because a 2♥ bid first wld have solved a lot of problems.

Double is absolutely fine you are showing 4 ♥s and 8+pts.

Partner has bid 1NT showing a ♠ stop I hope! and denying the ♥ support so over 2♠ you have a simple bid 3NT.

If u want to try for a minor game then 3♠ would be forcing and asking ptr to describe his hand further ( sounds like he's 2335 shape assuming he bids 1♦ if 44 in minors)

I don't mind the double (with such a poor diamond suit) but 3♦ is competitive and non-forcing. I would also say that 3♦ is not particularly constructive, as you can bid 2♦ initially with 'lower than normal' values after the overcall.

I'd have bid 3NT over 2♠. An alternative, if partner understood it, is 3♠ asking if he really has a stop but I'd expect 3NT to be a better contract that 5♣/♦.

My first impuls was to suggest 2H as well,
but I discovered in time, that you only have
a 4 card suit.

I would have started with 2♦. Your hand is strong enough to bid ♥'s later (or DBL) to show 5-4 ♥/♦ and a GF hand.

Haivng DBLed first, 3♦ now shows long ♦ and not strong enough to bid 2♦ initially. If you DBL first you should bid 3NT now.

what is wrong with initially responding two diamonds, with the plan of rebidding hearts, and maybe raising clubs if necessary? You have a full opener, enough for a reverse, support for partner. You have an opening hand opposite partner who opened the bidding.

conventions are meant to handle situations that can't be addressed thru normal (whatever that is) bidding, or to enhance bidding efficiency. here you have a simple, normal bid. the hand is a fine double playing nfb's, but that approach has its own problems.

In my view , what do I want to know in this hand?

And what game do I want to play in 4♥,3NT,5♣/5♦'s or higher?


(i) How strong is partner?
(ii) Does he have 4 ♥, if so 4♥ is no.1 choice
(iii) he hasn;t 4♥s then does he have a ♠ stop if not we a minor game looks very promising but which one so?
(iv) Does he have 4♦ or 5+♣?

Bidding 2♦ lets us know if partner has 4♦'s but the opps as the opps are likely to bid 2 or 3♠'s then we may lose the chance to find out and is 3♥ showing 4♥s or asking for a stop over 2♠ and promising a ♠ stop etc.

Bidding 2♦s here should deny 4♥ as look for the major first then plan B 3NT then plan C 5 Minor
